there was a brief period duringthe 1980s when the Peacock Report was expected to deregulate/neo-liberalise the BBC. The left formed up to defend it after years of decrying its proponsity to normativconservative balues. Defending the indefensible as one commentator said. Nonetheless a (reformed) public service channel is vital as a pace top fight these battles that cannpot be fought in a privatised industry
